The Second Month

みなさんこんにちは！ Hello everyone!

留学２ヶ月目である１２月の振り返りをしてみたいと思います。
Looking back December which is the second month of study abroad.

まず「農業は大変だ」ということです。先月と一緒やん！ってツッコミがくるかもしれませんが、本当に農業の厳しさを身に染みて知る毎日です。
At first, farming is so tough. Someone might notice "It's the same as last month, Megumi!!" but realise farming's difficulty everyday.

今月とても大きいストームが来て、大きな被害を受けた農家をたくさん見ました。収穫間際であったにも関わらず、全ての農作物がダメになっていました。どんなに丹念に育てていても、このようなことが起こってしまうのです。
I saw a lot of farms damaged by big storms and all of their products are gone on the brink of harvest. It happens even they grow elaborately.

ホストファミリーが「農業はギャンブルだ。」と言っていましたが、ドカンと高額当選するでもなく、作物を育てていくように毎日少しずつ勝ち続けたとしてもある日一瞬で全てを失ってしまいます。
My host family said 'Farming is like gambling.' Farming has no large sum winning and even we win little by little as grow produces, we might lose everything one day.

また今いる野菜農家ではこの時期主にズッキーニを育てているのですが、大きくなってしまったもの・柔らかいものなどはマーケットに送ることができず、大量のロスが出ています。さらにブリスベンのマーケットに送る送料も高いため、雀の涙ほどの利益しかありません。毎週１～２万円ほどです。
I am at a vegetable farm which has grown zucchini now. We have got lots of loss which are big ones or soft ones we cannot sell. Also carriage to a Brisbane market is expensive, so it is thimbleful of profit (about AUD$100-200 a week).

また農業は休みのない仕事だな、と痛感しています。土日休日関係なく働きます。毎日家畜にエサをあげる必要があるため、１日たりとも休みはありません。雑草は抜いても抜いても次の日には生えてきます。野菜は毎日管理してあげる必要があります。
Moreover farming is no day off work. We work Saturdays, Sundays and holidays too. We need to feed livestock everyday. Weeds grow on a next day weeding. Vegies need to be managed everyday.

農業の大変さを毎日ひしひしと感じていました。どうしたらもっと農家の人の生活が豊かになるのか、考えても答えが見出せず、悶々とした気持ちでいっぱいです。
Had felt how hard farming is everyday. Thought and thought how farmers life gets better, but could not find answer, just feel mortifying.

先月の目標であった「聞き役卒業」というのは少しずつ達成できていると思います。これからもどんどん質問し、会話をし、有機農業に関する知識をつけていきたいです。
I am achieving last month goal 'Graduate from a listener'. I will ask questions, have conversations and get to know more about organic farming.

来月の目標は「農家の改善点を考え、レポートに纏めて農家に提出する」ことです。頑張っていきます。
The objective of the next month is 'think of the farm's improvement, make a report and give it to them'.
