Potato Planting

みなさんこんにちは！　Hello everyone!

今更ながら私がナファートン初日に行った仕事を紹介したいと思います。
I'd like to show you what I did on the first day at Nafferton.

タイトルにもある通り、ジャガイモを植えました。なんと300品種！！！それを有機栽培２ブロック、慣行栽培２ブロックで計４ブロック、１品種のジャガイモを３つずつ植えたので、合計で3,600個です。これだけの品種があるため全て手作業で行いました。これだけのジャガイモを一気に見たのは初めてだったので、色や形・大きさの違いや芽の生え方の違いなどに気がつけて、とても面白かったです。
As you see on the title we planted potatoes! 300 genotypes of tubers! We've got 4 blocks(2 for organic and the other 2 for conventional) and planted 3 potatoes each so planted 3,600 in total. We did hand-plant because of so many varieties! It's my first time looking at so many potatoes so found some differences of colour, shape and eyes between varieties.

この研究の目的としては、①育てられる品種・上手く育たない品種とその理由を探る、②病気・害虫・薬剤・気温・乾燥のような環境条件に対して抵抗性があるものを見つけ出す、③オーガニックのジャガイモとそうでないものの具体的な栄養分の違い、④オーガニックとそうでないものの収穫量の違い、などを見つけ出すことです。
The purpose of the research is ①To know genotypes you can grow easily here and the reason of ones you cannot, ②To find out which one has resistant of disease, bugs, herbicides, temperature or dry, ③To discover nutritional differences between organic potatoes and conventional ones, ④To find out how much amount of yield is different and so forth.
