The North vs The South

今日はイギリス・イングランドの北部と南部の違いについて、面白いビデオを見つけたので紹介したいと思います。
I'd like to share a video I found about differences between Northerners and Southerners in England.

「北部出身で南部に住んでいる人が感じる８つのこと」BBC Threeより。北部の強い訛りが入っており、さらにみなさん早口なので何を話しているか聞き取りづらいかもしれませんが、ぜひ挑戦してみて下さい。その動画がこちら！

イングランドでは物や人の特徴が大きく北部と南部に分けられます。「北部の人は～よね」とか「南部だから～」といった会話をよく聞きます。このビデオでは南部に住んでいる北部出身の人が感じていることを８つにまとめているので、それを紹介していきたいと思います。会話の英語を書き出して、日本語訳もつけています。
People and things are often divided in the North and the South in England.
Conversations such as "The North people is like ~~~." or "Because the South is ~~~." are heard a lot. I will share what Northerners think in the South.

①北部なまりの英語をからかわれる
　People taking the piss out of your accent
　イギリスにはたっくさんのアクセント（訛り）があるのですが、北部のほうがアクセントが強い傾向にあります。動画に出ている例では、Face（顔）「フェイス（南部）」「フェース」、Goat（ヤギ）「ゴゥト（南部）」「ゴォート（北部）」、Bath（お風呂）「バース（南部）」「バス（北部）」などです。カタカナで文章化して説明するのがなかなか難しいですね...書き出したらきりがないほどたくさん違いがあります。
There are loads of English accents and the North tends to have stronger ones.

"Because it's "a".　「だって a じゃん。」（Bathの綴りがa）
"There's no "r" in the middle of it."「真ん中に r ないのにね。」

"But if I say things like "No" they'll be like "Noah". I didn't sound like that." 「私が『ノー(No)』って言ったらみんな『ノーア』って言い返すのよ。そんな発音してないわよ。」
"Yeah, I'll be like "No" and they'll go "Nuh".　「分かる、『ノー』って言ったら『ナァー』みたいに言ってくるよな。」
※北部のNoの発音は「ノーア」「ナァー」など。地域や個人差があります。

"All week it was "Nuh, y'alright luv? Nuh?" I'm like "Just shut up, just shut up". You're not even doing it correctly."　「もう毎週毎週『ナァー』『ヨーラーラヴ』『ナァー？』とか言われて、もう黙ってって感じだったの。真似するならせめてちゃんとやってよね。」

"You know how they say like in America, the English accent's an aphrodisiac? I feel like down here the Northern accent is not."　「アメリカだとイギリス英語ってセクシーなイメージだって言うけど、北部アクセントって全くだよね。」

②「ティー」vs「ディナー」
The "tea" vs "dinner" debate
　みなさん「朝食・昼食・夕食」を英語で？と聞かれたら、「Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner（あるいはSupper）」と答えますよね？しかしイギリス北部では違います！！北部の人は「Breakfast, Dinner, Tea」と言うのです！じゃあ紅茶は別の呼び方があるのかと思いきや、紅茶もTeaです(笑)これは元々Dinnerという単語が「一日のうちで主要な食事」を意味し、労働者階級の人はお昼にたくさん食べてスタミナをつけることから昼食がDinnerと呼ばれるようになったそう。そして夕方早めに食べる食事がTeaと呼ばれるようになりました（Afternoon teaの時間の食事であるからや、紅茶と一緒に夕食を取っていたからなど諸説あります）。さらにSupperという単語も夕食という意味で使われることが多いですが、北部では夕食後のスイーツを指します。
実際に研究所で働いている研究員さんたちは、昼食のことをDinnerと言う意味で「Dinner食べに行っといで」と言います。初めて聞いた時は？？？でした(笑)
If you are asked that how you say "morning meal, afternoon meal and evening meal", you'd say "Breakfast, Lunch and dinner or supper". However Northerners (especially working class) say "Breakfast, Dinner and Tea". It is said that because dinner means the main meal of the day and working class people eat main meals at noon and a little meal at afternoon tea time or evening. Supper also means dinner on the South but means sweets after evening meal on the North.
Actually people working at Nafferton say "Do you want to go for dinner?". I was very surprised at when I heard of it first.

"Dinnertime at school, dinnertime were 1 o'clock, you went for your dinner, not your lunch."　「学校でディナータイムが1時にあるのよね、ランチじゃないわ。」
"You had dinner ladies."　「ディナーレディーがいたわよね。」（学校の調理師の方）
"Exactly, dinner lady."　「そうよ！ディナーレディー！」

"I feel like dinner here is some just like even where people just sit around a table and they're like "Would you like more wine darling?" and I'm just like "No, where's me Twizzlers?"　「南部のディナーってなんかみんなで一つのテーブルに座って『お嬢さんワインのおかわりはいかが？』みたいなのよね。そうじゃなくてTwizzlersがいいの！」
※イギリス北部南部関係なく my の代わりに me が使われることがあり、この文章では「Where is my Twizzlers?」ではなく、「Where is ME Twizzlers?」になっています。

③中部の人は北部出身だと思っている
　Midlanders thinking they're Northerners
　中部にあるノッティンガム(Nottingham)やレスター(Leicester)の人たちは、北部出身だと言うそうですが、さらに北部の出身の人からしたら中部は南部なのだそう。(笑)

④家族が「ポッシュ」（上流者階級）だと言ってくる

　南部に行って訛りが薄くなると、実家に帰った時に家族に「上流者階級の人英語のようだ！」と言われてしまうそう。笑

⑤夜の外出でコートを着ない
　Bringing a coat on a night out
　北部の人は夜の外出でコートを着てはいけないそう(笑)実際にニューカッスルで夜歩いていても、最近は夜10℃～15℃くらいですが、ノースリーブで短いスカートを履いた女性をたくさんみます。
Actually when I was walking at night time in Newcastle I saw loads of women who were wearing a short length dress with no sleeve even it was about 10-15℃.

⑥フレンドリー過ぎて、南部の人に気持ち悪がられる
　People thinking you're weird if you're friendly
　北部の人はみんな驚くほどフレンドリーです。実際に「北部の人はフレンドリー」という固定観念があるそう。ニューカッスルで生活していて、「ニューカッスルに来て良かったわね！みんなフレンドリーだから！南部の人は忙しそうでフレンドリーじゃないわよ。」とよく言われます。
　People in Newcastle are really friendly. It is sort of stereotype that Northerners are more friendly. They say to me "Oh you're lucky that you came to the North because we are very friendly."

⑦南部は全てが高い
Everything is expensive
南部（特にロンドン）は物価がとっても高いです。食べ物、飲み物、お酒、交通費、ホテルやアパート全てが高いです。

　北部の人は北部愛がとっても強いです。南部にいても他の北部の人と会うのが大好きなんだそう。

　今回初めて動画の英語を書き下ろし、日本語に訳してみて、翻訳の難しさが分かりました。普段から会話をする時は、英語で理解して英語で返すように心掛けているので、いざこの動画を訳すとなった時英語で理解ができていても日本語が出てこないことがあり、英語を英語で理解できていることに気が付け、嬉しかったです。翻訳の練習もしていきたいです。
