County Show

みなさんこんにちは！ Hello everyone!

５月３０日はバンクホリデーという休日でした。Bank Holiday(バンクホリデー)というのは、1871年に制定されたBank Holidays Act(銀行休日法)という法律に由来し、銀行が休業することからきた公休日のことです。
Yesterday was Bank Holiday which came from Bank Holidays Act (1871) and banks are officially closed, kept as a public holiday.

私はその日「カウンティショー」に行ってきました。カウンティショーとは、Agricultural Show (農業ショー)とも呼ばれ、農家の方々や地域コミュニティ、農業系企業、地域大学などが行う催し物のことです。アカデミックなものを想像していたのですが、子どもから大人まで楽しめるお祭りのようでした。
I went Northumberland county show. It is also called Agricultural show which is a fair held by farmers, local communities, agricultural companies, universities and so on. It was a festival people of all ages can have a fun even not a farmer.

思っていたよりとっても大きかった！笑　It was much bigger than I thought!!

ニューカッスル大学は、研究していることを紹介するスペースや麦の種類を当てるクイズ、去年穫れた数種類の小麦を用いたパンの食べ比べ、牛（仮）を用いた乳しぼり体験などを行っていました。
Newcastle University had introduced their research, wheat quiz, comparison between breads used some different types of wheat harvested last year, milking for kids.

このショーには牛・羊・ヤギ・馬・うさぎ・ハト・ニワトリなどたくさんの動物がいました！羊の毛刈りショー、ホースレースなど、どれも見ていて楽しいものばかりでした。子どもたちはいろんな動物に触れ合うことができます。
There were many animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, horses, rabbits, pigeons, chickens and exciting shows as horse race, sheep sharing and so on. Children can have interaction with animals.

動物や展示物はたくさんのグループに分けられており、そのグループの中で１・２・３位を取ると、賞金がもらえるそうです。
Animals and exhibitions were divided by some groups and if got first, second or third prize you can get reward.

このショーに来ていた企業ですが、トラクター・農具・乗馬用品・農作業服・種や苗・農業保険などを販売している、農業の中でも多種多様な企業がお店を出していました。
Many agricultural companies were there as well which sold tractors, farm tools and clothings, horse-riding equipments, seeds and seedlings and farm insurance.

もちろんマーケットもあり、地元の農家の方たちがお店を出し、野菜や果物・チーズ・ジャム・パン・お肉などを販売していました。また日本のお祭りのように、屋台も数多くありました。
Local farmers were selling their products as vegies, fruits, cheese, jams, breads and meat at the market. Food stands as well like a Japanese festival.

このショーに来ていた人は、農業関係の人だけではなく、家族連れや友達同士で遊びに来ている人が大勢いるような印象を受けました。このショーのように楽しく農業を紹介することによって、農業に興味を持つ人が増えたり、食に対する意識が向上したり、農家の人と消費者が繋がりを持つことができるのではないかと思いました。また子どもたちも実際に動物を見たり触れ合うことで、農業・家畜動物が視覚的に楽しいものとして記憶に残るのではと思います。日本にはないような農業展示会でとても楽しかったです。
Those who came to the show looked like not only farmers but also people who came out for fun. I think the show makes them have an interest in agriculture, raise food quality awareness and make a relationship with growers. Children can also have a good memory through interaction with farming and livestock. I enjoyed it a lot!
